Itinerary

Make your own way to Auckland and check-in to your trip accommodation any time after 2:00pm. The city is New Zealand's largest, both in area and population and hence is often mistakenly thought of as the country's capital. Spend some time exploring the gardens and open spaces of The Domain, wander through the fascinating War Memorial Museum for a glimpse into Maori history and culture, visit the Sky Tower for spectacular 360 degree views, visit an art gallery, cruise the harbour, wander the foreshore or explore the shops. Food lovers will be spoilt for choice with a multitude of cafes, restaurants and bars to suit all budgets and tastes.

Meals:  Nil

You will be picked up from Auckland around mid-morning. Your journey starts when you are collected by your guide and head south to the historic Karangahake Gorge. Here you get a chance to stretch your legs on a short walk with stunning views of the Waitewheta river and the dramatic gorge, before heading through to our secluded hilltop Retreat and home for the next two nights. Relax this evening with a drink in hand or perhaps with a soak in the hut tub, taking in the panoramic views from the property as you get to know the others in the group. Tonight's meal will be specially prepared by our local chef, designed especially for us with fresh and seasonal produce.

Meals:  B,L,D

After enjoying breakfast with a view, we are off on a short drive to Homunga Bay where we will walk from Homunga Bay through to Waihi Beach. We ease into things with a gentle downhill to start things off and stunning views of white sand beaches, coastal rainforests, turquoise coloured waters and magnificent Pohutakawa trees. We walk our way around three different bays, stopping for a gourmet picnic on the beach. The walk consists of hills, flats and views - plenty of options for stopping and taking the perfect selfie. In Waihi Beach, enjoy a quick swim and cool off in the surf, before we head back to our lodge. Dinner will be served at the lodge before we are invited on a special behind the scenes at the Kaimai Distillery for a chat with the local brewer turned distiller on what makes the "Eliza's Claim" an award winning gin.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning, we journey up the eastern side of the peninsula, taking in breathtaking coastal views and making plenty of scenic stops along the way. Our morning walk is a gentle trek through native forest, leading us to the stunning Wentworth Falls and remnants of abandoned gold mines. Continuing north, we visit our wonderful friend Jillian at Cathedral Cove Macadamias, where we learn about her family-run business while indulging in some delicious macadamia treats. Next, we stop at Shakespeare’s Cliff for a panoramic view of the coastline that once captivated Captain Cook. A short ferry ride takes us to the charming seaside town of Whitianga, where there’s time for a coffee break and a leisurely stroll through the shops or along the beach. Crossing over to the western side of the peninsula, we arrive at our lodge in Coromandel Town, our home for the next two nights. This cozy, rustic retreat is nestled into the hillside, offering stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf and a design that embraces eco-conscious living.

Meals:  B,L,D

Lace up your boots as we set off on the coastal walkway, exploring the remote northernmost tip of the peninsula. This historic trail, once a bridle path forged by early pioneers, offers some of the most breathtaking coastal views of the journey. We weave through Kanuka forest and lush sub-tropical bush, discovering hidden bays that sparkle in the sunlight. Skirting the base of Mt Moehau, the track follows a gentle gradient, with a short but steep climb in and out of Poley Bay. From there, the path opens onto farmland, revealing sweeping views of Great Barrier Island. Back at the lodge, unwind with a soak in the hot tub or take a stroll along the private bush trail to a secluded waterfall. Tonight, we gather for dinner at the lodge, sharing stories from the day's hike over a glass of fine New Zealand wine.

Meals:  B,L,D

Enjoy a relaxed morning, perhaps with a coffee and a stroll through Coromandel Town, a hub for local artists, before visiting the charming Waiau Falls. For lunch, savor the peninsula’s freshest seafood, with plenty of options to suit every taste. We then journey south along one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking coastal drives, where every turn reveals another stunning view. In the afternoon, we take a gentle walk to Waiomu to admire one of the finest remaining Kauri groves—towering giants of the forest. The regenerating bush teems with new life, its moss-covered floor thriving beneath the lush canopy. Tonight, we settle into our locally hosted lodge in the picturesque Kauaeranga Valley. With its expansive deck overlooking the valley, it's the perfect spot to unwind with a glass of wine before dinner.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today, we trade coastal views for rugged, dramatic terrain on the popular yet challenging Pinnacles hike. The journey begins with a gentle warm-up along the Kauaeranga River, crossing a swing bridge and following an old pack horse track from the Kauri logging era. As we pass through groves of nikau palms, towering rata trees, and streams, we make our way up to the hut over the course of three hours, enjoying stunning ridge-line views of the Pinnacles as we emerge from the forest. The final stretch to the jagged summit is steep and requires some scrambling, but for those up for the challenge, the reward is breathtaking panoramic views. If you prefer to stay at the hut rather than summit, that’s absolutely fine. After a well-deserved lunch, we head back down the track and take a short drive to Mangotahi Lodge. There, we can relax and unwind with a celebratory glass of bubbles and a delicious meal on our last night together. NOTE: Please note that today's walk is a harder grading and definitely a challenge compared to the rest of the trip. Should you not wish to hike today, please talk to us.

Meals:  B,L,D

After a hearty cooked breakfast, we pack up and make our way back toward Auckland for a final highlight of the trip. We visit the private, regenerating forest of ‘Velskov’—Danish for 'The Forest That Is Well'—where we’re treated to an exclusive wild foraging tour of the property. Afterward, we enjoy a lunch made with the ingredients we've foraged, paired with forest-infused tea. Our host, Mamakan, a botanical artist and foraging expert, offers a fresh perspective on the native bush we've spent the week exploring. It’s a perfect way to wrap up a week of discovery and shared stories with new friends. Afterward, it’s a short transfer back to Auckland, where you can relax and enjoy dinner at one of the city’s many fine restaurants for your final evening.

Meals:  B,L

After breakfast this morning, trip arrangements end on check out. If you would like to stay longer to explore Auckland, please talk to us about additional nights.

Grading

Moderate
5

MODERATE - GRADE 5 This adventure involves walking up to 6 or 7 hours a day, at a steady pace. There is a 600m altitude gain on the hardest day. You will need a good level of fitness and must be in good health. Be prepared for potential variable weather conditions and uneven terrain. Walking each day is over a variety of trails including uneven bush tracks with mud, tree roots and rocks, as well as some well-maintained paths with even surfaces. Care needs to be taken as there are some steep sections that have a loose surface and are slippery when wet. We recommend 45 minutes of aerobic type exercise, three to four times a week for several months prior to travel for adequate fitness preparation. This can include swimming, jogging, hard walking or cycling. Hill or stair walking is also highly recommended at least once a week in variable weather conditions with a loaded daypack of about 12kg. On the trip you will need to carry your daily requirements such as water, lunch, spare clothing and personal items so it is a good idea to carry a daypack with some gear in it during your training.
