Safety Procedures for Walking in New Zealand

At Great Walks of New Zealand, we're passionate about creating enjoyable, immersive experiences with those "I did it!" moments. But when heading into NZ's wild outdoors, safety is priority, and it is important to be aware of the conditions.

Circumstances and plans can always change, so it pays to be well prepared. Here are some essential tips to safely explore the NZ's outdoors.

1. Preparation Before Walking

  • Plan your route and inform someone of your plans.
  • Check the weather forecast and prepare for sudden changes.
  • Carry a fully stocked first aid kit, including bandages, antiseptic wipes, blister plasters, pain relief, and emergency contact details.
  • Bring enough water, high-energy snacks, and sun protection.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the terrain.

On our guided walks, walkers will be advised of track conditions at trip briefings by their local guides. For our self-guided walkers, before setting out, please ensure you check the weather forecast and plan accordingly. It is not uncommon to experience all four seasons in one day while on the track! A good reference is www.metservice.com/warnings/home.

2. Common Walking Injuries & First Aid Responses

Blisters

  • Clean the affected area and apply a blister plaster or padding.
  • Avoid popping blisters unless they are painful or at risk of infection.

  • Avoid putting weight on the injured limb.

Cuts & Scrapes

  • Clean the wound with antiseptic wipes or clean water.
  • Apply pressure with a sterile dressing to stop bleeding.

Insect Bites & Stings

  • Remove stinger if present (scrape with a card, don’t pinch).
  • Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling.
  • Use antihistamine cream or medication for allergic reactions.
  • Seek medical help if breathing difficulties occur.

  • Move to a warmer location and replace wet clothing with dry layers.
  • Use blankets and body heat to warm the person.

  • Seek emergency medical help for severe cases.

  • Drink water or electrolyte solutions.

  • Apply pressure to wounds if bleeding.
  • Call 111 for emergency assistance.

Poisonous Bites

  • Keep the person calm and limit movement.
  • Apply pressure bandaging above the bite site (not too tight).
  • Do not suck or cut the wound.
  • Call 111 immediately.
